Do you know anyone whose thoughts and behaviors are somewhat different from most people? Thanks to the development of psychology, we can use these theories and research to understand unique populations, such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects social communication and behavior. In order to raise awareness of ASD, the United Nations designated April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day to promote acceptance and inclusion of those with ASD. Now, our storyteller Nana will introduce this important day in April to help us learn more about ASD and what we can do on World Autism Awareness Day. Are you ready to hear the story? Let's get started!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disease caused by brain development disorders. ASD children usually have difficulty in communication, understand others feelings, and repeat behavior or words over and over again. Therefore, it is hard for children to interact with their peers or even in learning. These symptoms oftenly appear in the first 2 years after the birth of children.
Autism was diagnosed in the mid-1900s. After that, in 1943, Dr. Leo Canner first described autism as childhood schizophrenia. In 1980, the diagnostic criteria of autism were formally established in the Handbook of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Additionally, the National Autistic Society in London adopted a ribbon with puzzles as the symbol of autism. Due to the fact that puzzles and ribbons reveal different colors and structures, they can reflect the complexity of the autism spectrum.
Finally, at the initiative of the representative of Qatar, the United Nation (UN) set up World Autism Awareness day on December 18th, 2007. Subsequently, the United Nation designated April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day.
