The National Moon Day

The National Moon Day

Aug 02. 2022

Have you ever found Neil Armstrong’s moon landing story fascinating? Or have you ever wondered who also landed the moon with Armstrong in 1969? If so, let’s continue the legendary story of men’s first moon landing!

The mission to put humans in space began in 1961 during former U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s time in office. President Kennedy was committed to landing a man on the moon within the next 10 years. On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 successfully launched from Cape Kennedy (also known as Cape Canaveral) and carried three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin to the moon. Armstrong was the commander, Collins was the command module pilot, and Aldrin was the lunar module pilot.

Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon, gathered materials on the moon and took photos of the moon’s surface, while Collin stayed in orbit around the moon. When Armstrong stepped on the moon’s surface, he spoke his famous words: “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” On July 24, 1969, all three astronauts safely returned to earth.

In 1971, former U.S. President Richard Nixon announced National Moon Day on July 20 to honor the date of men’s first moon landing on July 20, 1969.

One way to celebrate this important event in the history of mankind is to watch movies that have been created about landing on the moon. For example, In the Shadow of the Moon and Apollo 11 are both great historical and documentary films to understand National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) 1969 Apollo 11 mission.

In conclusion, the moon landing story inspires and teaches us invaluable lessons that we can all take to improve our lives. First, every step contributes to the leap. While people often focus on and remember Armstrong’s legacy, we should also draw our attention to all the people who made this mission possible, such as the engineers, controllers, programmers, researchers, etc. Each person has a part to play in a team, and we must trust that our work contributes to the whole even if it seems small or unimportant.

Second, collaboration makes a big goal achievable. Every person in this moon landing mission is like a small piece of a puzzle. It is important that they all play their role and work together to successfully land on the moon and establish a lasting legacy in the history of mankind.

Hope you enjoy our story of National Moon Landing. Thank you for reading and tuning in AEET storytelling! We will see you next time!
